Voyage to Kythera

A filmmaker weary of fiction seeks a story of substance. He becomes fixated on Spyros, an old lavender vendor and former communist, who has returned to Greece after 32 years of exile in Tashkent. In his village, which he once defended in wartime, Spyros witnesses the sell-off of land and ideals – and tries in vain to resist it. Alienated and unable to connect with his children or those around him, he finds solace only in his faithful wife, Penelope, who stays with him until the very end – his final journey.

The film opens Theo Angelopoulos' second trilogy —the "Trilogy of Silence"— which followed that of "History". The remaining parts of the trilogy are O Melissokomos (The Beekeeper, 1986) and To Topio stin Omichli (Landscape in the Mist, 1988). The screenplay idea belonged to the creator himself and Pierre Baudry. This work served as the epilogue to Dionysis Papagiannopoulos' and Manos Katrakis' illustrious careers in Greek cinema. In the film, George Dalaras performs the title track with music and lyrics by Eleni Karaindrou. With 115,955 tickets sold, the film ranked 8th among the 38 Greek productions of the season.
