The beekeeper

Spyros, a teacher in a small provincial town where he has spent his entire life, leaves everything behind – his home, his wife, his job – after his daughter’s wedding and his son’s departure. With his beehives in tow, he travels across the country, following the path of spring and the bees, as his father and grandfather once did. A chance encounter with a young woman rekindles old feelings and memories. For him, the past is everything; for her, it means nothing. Spyros, an old leftist and fighter, is now alone with his memories – too weary to keep fighting life’s battles.

This is the second film in the "Trilogy of Silence," chronologically situated between Taxidi sta Kythira (Voyage to Cythera, 1984) and Topio stin Omichli (Landscape in the Mist, 1988). Marcello Mastroianni did not learn Greek specifically for the needs of the project; during filming, he spoke in Italian and was subsequently dubbed into our language. The main filming took place in Epirus and Western Macedonia, including areas such as Ioannina, Florina, and Igoumenitsa. Among Eleni Karaindrou's compositions, the song "Ta vourkomena matia mou" (My tearful eyes) stands out, performed by George Dalaras. The film sold 100,000 tickets nationwide.
