A Greek journalist is accused of murdering an American colleague investigating political and oil-industry links in Greece. Authorities arrest a Jewish colleague and a key female witness – both end up dead. As the journalist begins his own investigation, he discovers a concerted effort to cover up the truth. But as he presses a witness to testify, she is also killed, and the net tightens around him and the truth he seeks.
Dimos Theos began filming in the winter of 1966, but he stopped when the Junta regime emerged. Since then, the film was considered illegal, but the director continued filming without permission, relying on the financial contribution from friends and the volunteer work from the crew. When the film was completed in July 1968, a print was spirited away abroad, with the filmmaker initially editing it in France and then in England. The film debuted at the Venice International Film Festival, where it competed in the competition section. After the junta’s collapse, additional filming took place with the financial support of shipowner Giorgos Papalios, and the film was completed at last, making its Greek premiere at the 1974 International Thessaloniki Film Festival. The film sold 6,887 tickets retroactively at its first screening in Athens, Piraeus, and the surrounding areas.
