Biography

Yiorgos Stamboulopoulos was born in Athens in 1936. From 1956, and for a decade, he worked as a first assistant director or production manager on more than fifty Greek films and international productions filmed in Greece. The making of his first feature film, Open Letter, was marked by the proclamation of the dictatorship in April 1967. The film, which made its way to the Locarno International Film Festival illegally and was honored with the FIPRESCI Award, was rejected the following year by the junta-selected jury of the Thessaloniki International Film Festival. For the entire duration of the dictatorship, he ceased all creative filmmaking endeavors, and made a living by producing and directing commercials, filming over a thousand between 1968 and 1984. During the 1980-1991 period, he directed three feature films – Marching On to Glory, Caution Danger, Two Suns in the Sky – along with several television films for public and private television. After a fifteen-year long absence, he crafted the nostalgic drama Pandora, in 2006.
